Established in 1847 as Thomson College of Civil Engineering, it was granted university status in 1949 and subsequently converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001. Admission to its undergraduate engineering programs is primarily through a competitive rank in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. IIT Roorkee boasts a rich academic history, particularly in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, and Chemical Engineering, consistently ranking among the top engineering institutions in India. Candidates must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class 12th (or equivalent) examination, or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective qualifying examination board. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the aggregate marks requirement is 65%. The institute offers a wide array of undergraduate (B.Tech, B.Arch), postgraduate (M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs across various engineering, science, and humanities disciplines. It is an Institute of National Importance and holds NIRF Rank 5 in the Engineering category (2024).
